Quick Thought on JAMB Cut-Off Mark: What You must know

Jubilation in the air as JAMB declared 120 and above for universities and 100 and above for polytechnics and colleges of education in the 2017 admission exercise. Admission seekers are now full hope with is news. Without doubt, this should be the lowest cut of mark announced by JAMB in the last ten years.

Are you an admission seeker who seems confused as to what this announcement mean? Or you know a friend or family in dilemma regards his or her hope for admission this year? Are you not certain if your proposed schools will accept the cut-off mark as announced or you want to know if you should do change of institutions based on this announcement?

I understand the situation you’re in, and you’re not the only one in this mess. Please read to the end of this post for light sheds on it.

Does it mean that all universities will accept 120 and polytechnics and college 100 and above?

I must be frank with you. This is not the first time JAMB will announce cut-off mark to be considered by institutions. However, records have it that 70% of the federal universities will not comply with this directive.

In the recent admission years, JAMB announced 180 and above for universities, yet schools like UI, OAU, UNIBEN,UNILAG UNILORIN (180 and above, depending on the course) to mention a few, still demanded 200 and above from admission seekers. Hence, if you are targeting one of these more competitive schools, forget “the 120 and above JAMB cut-off” can favour you.

Truth be said, if these school could not accept 180 when it was declared, why would they go low to 120 this time around?

Which schools may likely accept this?

As a matter of fact, majority of state schools will go for lower mark but not as low as 120. You can expect 150 and above from state schools. They are not that are not competitive and that are hungry for students.

However, some schools will want to still maintain their ego by taking their 180 and above. But it’s more certain that 90% of state universities will accept 180 and above.

Some Federal schools will still want to be federal directive abiding. Such schools include the ABU Zaria, Federal Poly Ede, Federal Poly Off, Federal Poly Ado, Federal Poly Ilaro, Federal Poly Ile-Oluji etc. Yet I don’t see them taking 120 and above.

State polytechnics and colleges of education have freedom to decide their cut-off mark and you may consider change intuitions to these schools as they may likely accept 120 and above.

I don't doubt private schools accepting lower mark to the level announced by JAMB, they can even go lower.

This is my quick thought on the JAMB cut-off mark. Please expect a comprehensive preview of this year post UTME and what each school is mostly like to declare as cut marks.

N-power has initially made it clear that not all the 300,000 applicants shortlisted will be eventually selected for the jobs. Meanwhile, the support team has said the verified applicants to wait for the “next communication” or update from them and avoid reading from unofficial sources.
